Mental Health

Mental Health, defined by the United States National Institutes of Health, is a state of well-being wherein the person realizes her or his capabilities, can handle the normal stresses of everyday life, is able to work effectively and productively, and can make an active contribution to society. The term is derived from the Greek words "Mental" (mind) and "Health" (living) and thus implies mental and physical wellness. Mental Health is closely linked to physical health because mental health reflects how healthy a person's brain is physically. It also plays an important role in overall physical wellness because it relates to our ability to use the body and the mind to enhance one another's performance. The ability to be mentally healthy is very important for overall health and is associated with a number of positive outcomes.

Although many people may not associate mental health with physical health, the link between the two is quite strong. In order for a person to achieve mental wellness, they must first have good mental health. This can be achieved through effective exercise and a balanced diet. If someone is under stressful circumstances, they will likely become depressed. This will make it difficult to deal with their daily stresses. Depression will cause them to withdraw and reduce their ability to work. These symptoms are typically seen among individuals who are suffering from a wide variety of conditions and illnesses.

People who suffer from mental illnesses often do not realize that they need to maintain a balanced diet and exercise. Individuals who are depressed often lack the proper amounts of nutrition which may lead to serious health problems. When an individual is depressed, they also will not be able to focus properly on their tasks, will have trouble with sleep, and may even experience heart palpitations.

Healthy eating habits and regular exercise help a person to maintain a balance in their lives. People who are healthy tend to be more alert and have a better ability to think and perform better than those who are not. Healthy individuals will be less likely to smoke, abuse alcohol, engage in unsafe sex practices, and have an addictive personality disorder.

People who are mentally healthy tend to have a greater sense of self-worth and self-confidence, and they also are much less likely to feel bad about themselves. They may also be more assertive and responsible with their relationships, have higher self-esteem, are more likely to strive for success in school, work, and sports, and be involved with civic groups and organizations.

Mental health can be accomplished with mental training such as yoga or meditation. There are many books available on these topics and individuals who can provide assistance on healthy lifestyles. Counselors are also available who can discuss ways to help those who suffer from depression or anxiety.
